Introduction

A home at last!

For many years, Israel had been living a rootless, nomadic existence (qv). But, then, with the death of the last person who had rebelled against the Lord, it was time to lead His People home.

Up until now, 'home' had existed more at the Spiritual Level than the Physical; physically, their place was where the Tabernacle of the Covenant had been set up. But now it was time to provide Israel with a fixed place which they could call 'home': an existential place which would point the way to that existential place being prepared in Heaven, namely the New Jerusalem.

However, this new chapter in Israel's history would bring major changes to the Covenant!

Transition Amendment

With the change from nomadic existence to a more settled way of life would require many amendments to the Covenant. For example:

establishment of cities of refuge (amendment to the law relating to murder and manslaughter (Numbers 35:6-34))
boundaries of Canaan; allotment of land (Numbers 34)
the Tent of the Covenant was replaced by Solomon_10C's Temple, in Jerusalem (1 Kings 6)
Zion chosen for the Lord's dwelling place
For the Lord has chosen Zion, he has desired it for his dwelling, saying, 14 “This is my resting place for ever and ever; here I will sit enthroned, for I have desired it.” (Psalm 132:13-14 NIV)
